Snakes (Serpentes)

Snakes (Serpentes) are elongated, legless reptiles covered in overlapping scales. Unlike legless lizards most snakes lack eyelids and external ears. They are found on every continent (except Antarctica) and most continental islands, with some notable exceptions. Additionally, the sea snakes are widespread in warm coastal waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. There are up to 24 families of snakes, comprising 520 genera and 3,620 contemporary species (as of August 2016). The taxonomy of Serpentes is unsettled and some of the existing families may be split in the future. The majority of snakes are nonvenomous and kill their prey by constriction or swallow it alive. Although nearly 600 species are considered venomous, only 200 are of medical concern to humans.
